Connecticut Green Bank Energy Storage Solutions Program

Get up to $16,000 for using your home battery to reduce grid reliance

Energy Storage Solutions incentive program

The Energy Storage Solutions battery storage incentive program substantially lowers the cost of purchasing a home battery system through both upfront and performance incentives. The program is overseen by the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA), paid for by electric ratepayers, and administered by the Connecticut Green Bank, Eversource, and UI.

In addition, sell the power you generate with your home solar panels to Eversource or UI through the Renewable Energy Solutions program.

Reduce your battery installation cost

Energy Storage Solutions lowers your initial battery storage investment with both upfront and performance incentives. You’ll also help create a more reliable and resilient energy infrastructure for all of Connecticut.

Upfront Incentives

Reduce your out-of-pocket costs before installation. Customers can qualify for up to $16,000 in exchange for allowing your battery to reduce your electric grid demand on hot summer days, effective for 10 years.

Performance Incentives

Performance incentives are paid twice a year for 10 years based on how your battery performs during peak summer and winter days.

Incentive Adders

The following added incentives are available for these priority customers (maximum incentive remains $16,000):

What Is the ConnectedSolutions Program?

During times of very high demand for electricity, think everyone using their A/C on a hot summer’s day, utilities must rely on non-environmentally friendly options to meet customer demand. Enrolling in ConnectedSolutions allows your utility to instead use some of your stored solar power in your EVERVOLT home battery system during peak demand events. This lowers pollution, increases grid stability, and financially compensates you.

So how do you enroll?

Step 1

  • As long as you live within Massachusetts or Rhode Island, have an EVERVOLT home battery system successfully installed and commissioned, and have an interconnection through Eversource, National Grid, Rhode Island Energy or Cape Light Compact you should be eligible

  • Once you have confirmed your eligibility your utility requires an application to be submitted for enrollment

FAQs

  • The ESS is a new energy storage incentive program aimed towards United Illuminating and Eversource customers who have energy storage systems installed. Participants in this program will help provide additional benefits to all customers by lowering energy demand, balancing energy supply, and ultimately help prevent rising energy costs.

  • Connecticut residents with a Panasonic EVERVOLT® home battery system and grid interconnection through either United Illuminating Source or Eversource CT Service.

  • Only Panasonic Authorized Storage Installers and certified electricians can/should install, maintain or replace any EVERVOLT system and components. Find a local Panasonic certified installer here.

  • The EVERVOLT Home Battery System can be installed either indoors or outdoors with appropriate spacing. If installed outdoors, your installer should ensure that you avoid areas of direct sunlight, rain or snow.

  • Visit solar.na.panasonic.com/homeowner to find out more about Panasonic solar panels and battery storage products.

  • Involvement in demand events will vary depending on which dispatch option you choose: Active dispatch or Passive dispatch

    Active dispatch:

Expected (can opt-out) to participate in all dispatch events. Compensates participants for the average power (kW) dispatched two times throughout the year. This is a performance-based incentive structure.

You will be notified a day ahead of an upcoming demand event occurring. The duration of these events will be separated into two seasons: Summer (June – September) and Winter (November – March). Expect between 30-60 events during the summer and 1-5 events in the winter between 12pm-9pm EST. The event duration lasts a maximum of 3 hours.

    Passive dispatch:

Requires eligible battery energy storage systems participate in all passive dispatch events. This is an upfront incentive structure. EVERVOLT batteries will receive a signal to dispatch from the utilities prior to the demand event. The duration of these events will be during June, July and August between 3pm-8pm EST. These events will reduce your battery to at most 20% of charge reserved.

  • No. You can have a standalone EVERVOLT battery system without solar and still participate in the Connecticut Energy Storage Solutions program.

  • The CT ESS program is designed only for grid-connected systems.

  • The EVERVOLT system requires a reliable internet connection to participate in demand response events.

  • Active dispatch participants can opt-out of events, but will not be compensated for events they do not participate in.

Passive dispatch participants are required to participate in passive dispatch events for a minimum of 10 years. Additionally, they are required to participate in at least 90% of passive dispatch hours yearly or risk losing eligibility to participate in the program.

  • Once you’ve confirmed eligibility you must contact your installer to formally enroll your battery system in the CT-ESS Program.

  • Your compensation will depend on whether you choose Active dispatch or Passive dispatch.

For Active Dispatch, you will receive performance-based incentives from your utility company (Eversource or United Illuminating). Participants will be compensated for their battery energy dispatched twice during the year, once after the summer season and another after the winter season.

For Passive Dispatch, you will receive upfront incentives from your utility company. Participants are required to participate in passive dispatch events.

  • Participants will receive performance incentives for their battery’s average dispatched energy (kW) to the grid. This compensation will be available at the end of both summer and winter seasons. This information regarding program incentive amounts is outlined in the Program Manual.

  • The Panasonic EVERVOLT home battery system includes a comprehensive 12-year warranty

  • Scheduled demand events that dispatch energy from your battery to the grid will reserve a minimum reserve level of 20%. In the event of a storm, batteries will sense any power loss and will immediately begin feeding power to your home.
